Dogecoin is worth about $13 billion, yet most of it just sits in wallets. A new testnet called DogeOS wants to give DOGE real apps, and eventually let Dogecoin's own miners guard them.

What happened
DogeOS, a project from the team behind the MyDoge wallet, launched a public testnet on 1 October 2026. It lets developers build lending, trading and a crypto-backed stablecoin on top of Dogecoin. For now, the network is run by selected operators. The long-term plan is for Dogecoin miners to secure it.
Dogecoin has a market value of roughly $13 billion, which puts it among the largest cryptocurrencies. But unlike Ethereum, it has almost no apps. Most DOGE is simply held in the hope the price goes up. DogeOS founder Jordan Jefferson argues that real uses, such as borrowing against DOGE or trading it on-chain, would give people a reason to hold it beyond price speculation.

How DogeOS works, in plain words
Apps run on a side network
DogeOS is Ethereum-compatible, so developers can use familiar tools. Users pay fees in test DOGE.
Work is proven, not repeated
Zero-knowledge proofs are small pieces of data that show the work followed the rules, without anyone redoing it.
Trusted operators sign off today
A permissioned sequencer orders transactions. Validators, protected hardware and a Security Council check the updates.
Miners could take over later
A proposed Dogecoin upgrade, OP_CHECKZKP, would let miners verify the proofs directly on the main chain.
The last step is the important one, and it is not ready. The OP_CHECKZKP idea was published in July 2025, and code for Dogecoin Core was submitted in December 2025. It is still a draft with no activation date. No mainnet date has been set for DogeOS either.

Dogecoin has tried this before
Two earlier attempts to build apps around DOGE drew early money and then faded. Dogechain, launched in 2022, pulled in about $4.6 million in its early days. DeFiLlama now tracks less than $300 in its apps. Shibarium, launched in 2023 by the Shiba Inu community, peaked near $6.4 million and is down to about $140,000.

DogeOS says it is different on two counts. The Dogecoin Foundation backs it, with director Timothy Stebbing endorsing the project, whereas the Foundation distanced itself from Dogechain. And its roadmap ends with miner-based security rather than a permanent set of trusted operators.

CoinDesk, 1 October 2026; CoinGecko price. Bitwise has announced it will close its Dogecoin ETF.
Demand from big investors has been thin. Three US Dogecoin ETFs took in only about $12 million in net flows over 9.5 months, and Bitwise is closing its fund. Jefferson's bet is that buying DOGE was never the problem. Doing something with it was.

WHY MINERS SHOULD CARE
Dogecoin is not mined alone. It is merge-mined with Litecoin on Scrypt machines, so one miner earns both coins at once. If DogeOS succeeds, Dogecoin miners would gain a new job: checking the proofs that keep apps honest. More use could also mean more on-chain fees. It is early, but it is a rare story where the chain's miners are part of the plan. See how the Antminer L9 mines Dogecoin and Litecoin together, or compare the L9 and L11 Hydro.
