Meme Coins Popped in September, Then Cooled Off: DOGE, BONK, PENGU and the Scams to Avoid

Altcoins  |  ONEMINERS NEWS DESK

Dogs, frogs and penguins rode Bitcoin's rally this month. This week most of them slipped, and the scammers came out in force.

The short version

Most big meme coins are up over the past 30 days but down over the past week. BONK (+35%) and WIF (+28%) led the month. Dogecoin is up about 13% in September. There is no brand-new viral coin this week, but there is a fresh wave of scams.

Meme coins usually move like Bitcoin, only louder. When Bitcoin jumped to $87,000 on 21 September, meme coins jumped too. Dogecoin peaked near $0.100 on 23 September, about 21% above where it started the month. When Bitcoin cooled, so did they. DOGE now trades around $0.094.

What about a new coin?

There is no new token that everyone is talking about this week. The trending lists are full of familiar names. PENGU, the Pudgy Penguins coin, is trending thanks to events at Korea Blockchain Week, even though it fell about 9% this week. Be careful with articles promising the next 100x "presale". Many of them are paid ads, not news.

The scam warning of the week

Researchers flagged a meme coin scam factory that launched 53 fake tokens between July and September and drained about $18.4 million from buyers. The pattern is always the same: a new token, a burst of hype, then the creators pull the money out within minutes. Separately, California just banned public officials from issuing meme coins, a sign of how often these launches go wrong.

1
Check who controls the supply. If a few wallets hold most of the coins, they can sell on you.
2
Ignore DMs and comment links. Look-alike tickers are a common trick.
3
Only use money you can lose. Meme coins have no revenue behind them, only attention.

THE ONEMINERS VIEW

Meme coins run on attention. Bitcoin mining runs on electricity and hardware. If you want exposure to crypto that does not depend on a trend lasting, a Bitcoin miner produces new coins every day, based on the network and not on hype. See the Bitcoin miners in stock.
