The XRP Ledger Is Patching Its Lending Code Before It Even Launches. Here Is How That Works

Crypto NewsOneMiners Guides6 min read

A security patch is on track to go live on Friday with not a single vote to spare, and the lending system it repairs still is not approved. A plain-English look at how a blockchain fixes code nobody is using yet, and why Bitcoin does it so differently.

In one paragraph

A bug-fix package called fixCleanup3_4_0 is set to switch on across the XRP Ledger around 09:34 UTC on Friday, 23 October. It has exactly 29 validator votes, the minimum needed, so a single validator changing its mind would restart the clock. The fix partly repairs Ripple's proposed lending system, which is still 10 votes short of approval. In other words, the code is being fixed before anyone can use it, which is how careful upgrades are supposed to work.

01

So what actually happened?

The XRP Ledger does not change its rules by decree. Each change is an amendment, and it only turns on when the network's validators agree. On Monday the bug-fix amendment fixCleanup3_4_0 was nine days into its two-week countdown, with support from 29 of the 35 validators the network trusts by default. If that holds until Friday, it activates.

According to the xrpld 3.4.0 release notes, the package does three things:

It closes a loophole where an account allowed only to burn tokens on an issuer's behalf could, in some cases, create new ones.

It changes how vaults round amounts, so small differences cannot pile up.

It changes how the lending code decides when a loan is late or in default.

02

Why fix code nobody is using?

Because that is the cheapest moment to do it. Ripple's lending system is not live. Under the proposal, lenders deposit XRP or another token into a vault, and a loan broker lends it out for a fixed term. The ledger records each loan and tracks repayments. Borrowers post no collateral, so the broker's judgement is the only thing standing between lenders and a default. Ripple has pitched the idea to banks and payment companies since June, mainly for firms that need cash while cross-border payments settle.

With no collateral behind the loans, the rules for 'late' and 'default' are the safety net. Getting them right before real money arrives is much easier than fixing them after.

03

How does an XRPL vote work, step by step?

1

A new server version ships

Developers release software (here xrpld 3.4.0) that contains the amendment, switched off.

2

Validators signal support

Each of the 35 default validators decides whether to vote yes.

3

Cross 80%

Once more than 80% (29 validators) vote yes, a two-week countdown starts.

4

Hold for two weeks

If support dips below 29 at any point, the clock resets to zero.

5

Activation

After two straight weeks above the line, the new rules switch on for everyone.

How is this different from Bitcoin?

On Bitcoin, nobody has a list of trusted validators. Soft-fork upgrades have usually been signalled by miners, in the blocks they produce. Under the classic BIP 9 process, 95% of blocks in a 2,016-block window (about two weeks) had to signal support. For Taproot, the last big upgrade, the threshold was 90%; it locked in in June 2021 and went live that November. Every node then checks the new rules for itself.

Two ways to upgrade a blockchain

XRP Ledger Bitcoin
Who signals 35 default validators Miners, block by block
Threshold More than 80% (29) 90% to 95% of blocks
Window Two weeks, held continuously One 2,016-block period
What it costs to vote Running a trusted server Real hashrate and electricity

The key difference is in the last row. A Bitcoin miner's signal is backed by real machines burning real power, so upgrades move only when the people securing the network are ready. That is slower, but it is also one reason Bitcoin's rules change so rarely. Miners are not just block producers; they are part of how Bitcoin decides what Bitcoin is.

What happens next?

If all 29 validators hold, fixCleanup3_4_0 activates on Friday. The lending and vaults amendments still need to reach 29 votes and then hold them for two weeks, so the earliest lending could start is early November. XRP itself traded near $1.31 on Monday.

The OneMiners view

Careful upgrades are a sign of a healthy network, and Bitcoin has the most conservative upgrade culture of all. For miners, that stability is the point: the rules that decide what a machine earns barely change. OneMiners hosts Bitcoin miners from $0.048 per kWh, and from $0.0364 per kWh on a 7-year prepaid contract, so the other big number in the equation stays steady too.

Frequently asked questions

What is fixCleanup3_4_0?

A bug-fix amendment for the XRP Ledger, shipped in xrpld 3.4.0. It closes a token burn-and-mint loophole and changes vault rounding and loan default rules.

When does the XRPL fix go live?

Around 09:34 UTC on 23 October 2026, if its 29 validator votes hold until then.

Is XRPL lending live?

No. The lending amendment has 19 of the 29 votes it needs and has not started its two-week countdown, so it cannot go live before early November.

Do Bitcoin miners vote on upgrades?

Bitcoin soft forks have usually been activated by miners signalling in blocks, with thresholds of 90% to 95% over a 2,016-block period. Nodes then enforce the new rules.
