Bitcoin's PCE Bounce to $85,500 Stalls as Treasury Yields Stay Stubborn

Market News  |  ONEMINERS NEWS DESK

A softer inflation report gave Bitcoin a quick lift above $85,500 on Wednesday. Within hours it was back near $83,500, held down by a bond market that refuses to relax.

What happened

The US PCE inflation report for August came in cooler than expected, and Bitcoin jumped to about $85,650 within the hour. The rally did not last. With the 10-year Treasury yield stuck near 5.3%, Bitcoin slid back to roughly $83,500 by Thursday morning.

PCE, short for Personal Consumption Expenditures, is the inflation gauge the US Federal Reserve watches most closely. August's reading showed prices up 3.4% from a year earlier, with core inflation (which strips out food and energy) at 3.0%. Both were softer than markets feared, and traders quickly trimmed their bets on another Fed rate hike in October.

Why bond yields matter to Bitcoin

A Treasury yield is the return investors get for lending money to the US government. When that return is high, holding assets that pay nothing, such as Bitcoin or gold, becomes harder to justify. Right now the return is very high. The 10-year yield sits around 5.28%, close to Wednesday's peak of 5.3%, and the 30-year yield is at 5.62%, near its highest level since 2002.

That is the wall Bitcoin hit. Dan Khus, chief analyst at LVRG Research, told CoinDesk the softer inflation number was read as a relief signal, and Bitcoin jumped back above $85,000 as bond yields dipped. Once yields climbed back, the move faded.

What to watch next

Treasury yields. A clear move below 5% on the 10-year would remove the main weight on crypto prices.
The October Fed meeting. A cooler PCE print makes a rate hike less likely, but not ruled out.
The $85,000 level. Bitcoin has now been rejected there twice in ten days, so a clean break would matter.

THE ONEMINERS VIEW

Macro headlines move the price by a few percent in an hour, but a Bitcoin miner on cheap, fixed power keeps producing coins every ten minutes on average, whatever the bond market does. For miners, the number that counts is the cost of each kilowatt-hour against the price of each coin. See how hosted mining works, or check how recent price moves fed into miner revenue.
