What happens today

At 2:00 p.m. Eastern today, the Federal Reserve publishes the minutes of its 15 to 16 September meeting, where it raised rates by 0.25 points to 3.75% to 4.00%. It was the first hike since July 2023. The minutes show how strongly officials lean toward another hike on 28 October.

Why the minutes matter this time

The decision itself is old news. The minutes add detail: how many officials pushed for more, how worried they are about inflation, and whether anyone argued for a pause. In September, the Fed signalled that at least one more hike could come before the end of the year.

Markets have already started to doubt that. After weak US data last week, including job openings of 7.08 million against a 7.23 million forecast and consumer confidence at its lowest since 2014, the odds of an October hike fell from about 71% to about 51%.

How Bitcoin handled the first hike

Better than many expected. Bitcoin dipped to roughly $75,000 in the hour after the decision, then climbed back above $80,000 within two days. It trades near $83,722 today. That is very different from 2022, when rapid hikes helped push crypto into a deep bear market.

What higher rates mean for Bitcoin miners

Price. Higher rates make safe assets like Treasuries more attractive, which can weigh on Bitcoin. That moves hashprice, now about $40 per PH per day.
Financing. Borrowing to buy hardware gets more expensive. Big public miners feel this most, because many fund expansion with debt.
Inflation. The Fed is hiking because prices are rising. Rising prices usually mean rising power bills, unless your rate is fixed.

That last point is the one small miners control. A fixed hosting rate turns the biggest cost of mining into a known number. OneMiners publishes rates from $0.048 per kWh in Nigeria, and $0.0364 on a 7-year prepaid contract.

What to watch in the minutes

How many officials wanted a bigger move than 0.25 points.
Whether inflation is described as broad or tied to one-off factors.
Any sign of a pause after one more hike. That would likely be read as good news for Bitcoin.

THE ONEMINERS VIEW

Nobody can forecast the Fed. What miners can do is take the variable out of their own costs. Inflation shows up in power bills first, so fixed electricity is the simplest hedge a Bitcoin miner has. See every rate on the hosting centers page.
